I went out to Staten Island today for the first time to see my mom & my family, go help an old & close friend whose house was severely damaged - it was harrowing, alarming. The South Shore, which was where I grew up after we moved from Brooklyn when I was in 6th grade, where I played in my first punk rock bands, where I met my first girlfriend, is pretty annihilated.

My friend’s house & neighborhood look like … comparisons fail. Dilapidated horror-movie shack setpieces, war-torn regions of the third world. Really eye-opening, even after days of media saturation. Saw the FEMA HQ set up by the destroyed boardwalk, the clusters of dead boats knotted up unnaturally on land, the miles-long gas lines (at the few places where gas was even available), the entirely-uprooted trees, the devastated beach front, the power out almost everywhere. A long way from anything resembling or approaching “normal.” Sobering.

Please look at this site & see if you can contribute, some time, some money, something, and please spread the word about the help required in the Forgotten Borough. Thank you all.
